In 2018, the 13th annual World AIDS Marathon was held again in Kisumu on World AIDS Day (December 1st). The Event was sponsored by the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation and organized by Athletics Kenya. The Richard M. Brodsky Foundation provided $5,000 in prize money and sponsored 4 orphan dinner dances for 728 Kenyan children and 334 children were examined and treated at the orphan dinner dances. With your help, we can do more in 2019.
The 2018 World AIDS Marathon was the first time ever that the start and finish was not at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground and I have been informed that the 2019 World AIDS Marathon WILL START and FINISH at JOMO KENYATTA SPORTS GROUND. With that said, there was an overwhelming feeling of camaraderie amongst the International runners from San Diego, Houston, Boston, Long Island, Spain, Germany, Nigeria and Kenya. What a thrill it is to be running with Kenyan runners and not just at the start. The marathon and half marathon are 4 and 2 loop courses so unless you run a sub 3-hour marathon, you will be lapped by most of the Kenyan marathon runners.
The Foundation's newest board member, Mfalme Arthur of KEMRI, and Kevin Kinong Momanyi introduced us to Eunice Owino of Jiu Pachi and a very successful, joyous orphan dinner dance was held on December 2, 2018. We will definitely be returning there in 2019. Dr. Richard Sartori provided the medicine for all four orphan dinner dances, Bonyo’s Kenya Mission and KEMRI provided rapid malaria test kits and additional vitamins were provided by KEMRI.

Jiu Pachi orphan dinner dance December 2
248 orphans, caretakers, volunteers, and International runners dined and danced at Jiu Pachi and 54 orphans and caretakers were examined and treated. Altogether from the four orphan dinner dances, 728 dinners were served and 334 orphans were examined and treated. 50 - 75% of the orphans had malaria and almost 100% of those examined had parasites. The U5MR, under 5 mortality rate, has been dropping every year since 1997 but currently there is 1 child out of 22 children who will die before their 5th birthday according to UNICEF. These statistics need to be reduced and as long as we can return next year, we will do our small part to reduce the number of children dying. Without the medicine which Dr. Sartori, Dr. Bonyo and Mfalme Arthur of KEMRI CDC provided; 20 - 25% of the children who tested positive for malaria or parasites would die. What is even more shocking is these kids are great dancers and many of them did not know they had malaria or parasites!
